The founders built checks and balances into the Constitution. Their aim was to prevent any one branch of government from becoming too powerful. But over the years, something has gone wrong: the presidency accumulated enormous powers. Why were checks and balances a good idea, what went wrong, and
what could set it right?

Facilitator

Steve Golin, historian, is the author of Women Who Invented the Sixties: Ella Baker, Jane Jacobs. Rachel Carson, and Betty Friedan, published in 2022, and two previous prize-winning books on New Jersey history. He taught for forty years at Bloomfield College and Kansas State University.
