Tasting History is a two-hour, hands-on workshop where approximately a dozen participants mix, shape, boil, and bake old-school New York bagels, while learning about the bagel's deep connection to the New York City area's history and
community. This workshop combines making and meaning.
By the end of class, participants will come to see the bagel as far more than a simple bread roll. We'll explain that it tracks some of the most fascinating and important developments in the story of the lower east side, of the city as a whole, and of the country itself.
The bagels appearance in America is a result of our country's early immigration policy...It played a role in the growth of organized labor...And it's also a prime example of the changes in the American diet. In short, the Tasting History class blends kitchen skills, cultural storytelling, and community engagement in a tactile alignment of food heritage, culinary tourism, and immigration history.
There is a $15 materials fee included in the tuition.
This class will be co-taught by Jeff Cooperman and Lauren McGrath.
