"On This Ground" tells the remarkable story of a school that refused to die in a city that almost did. The school is St. Benedict's Prep, the city is Newark, and the extraordinary people who accomplished this are the Benedictine monks of Newark Abbey and the students they've taught for over 150 years.
Joining author and longtime Montclair resident Anthony DePalma will be Anthony Badger, a member of the first class in the reimagined St. Benedict's in 1973, and Jared Boone, St. Benedict's class of 2013, who is now program partner for the Schumann Fund for New Jersey. Both men gave back to St. Benedict's by teaching there before moving on to community-based careers. Both lived in Newark during their time as students at St. Benedict's and witnessed the many ways in which the resilience of the monks and their school helped stabilize the city during its darkest days, including the 1967 civil disturbances and the recent pandemic shutdown.
We'll go over important ways that other schools can learn from and adapt some of St. Benedict's winning ways.
